Lady Venus

Lady Venus Memoriam, 2/8/2007 Take a really good look at this picture. It captures Lady Venus in the prime of her beauty. Like a Goddess, she is in total command of her presence: radiating confidence, composure, and conviction. She is the picture of a Reggae queen. "Yes King, Yes Queen" we say to one another, but truly, we should check the meaning of what we say and live up, as Lady Venus has, in her time. Before Lady Saw and many others, there was Lady Venus, capable of sensitive and cutting lyrics. She was no wallflower, everything stopped when she came in the room. But she had a sense of humor, an intelligent playfulness that let you know she knew what you were up to, indeed she knew the foibles of all mankind (and I mean that literally). Nuff tribulations she went through, particularly leading up to her passing this week. But to me, that's not how I remember her. I remember her, as this picture portrays her, strong and vibrant as she was when I clicked the shutter 5 years ago at Bill's Bar in Boston (2002). Lady Venus recorded a song with Dub Station before that, and of course, she was a pleasure to work with in the studio. In fact, we'd hoped to work together again, on stage AND recording. She was working hard, though, and succeeding in the fulfillment of her own dreams, her career, and her family. That family and that history - the lives she touched - stretched all the way from her homeland of Jamaica to the North Shore, and across the globe. She made us feel good, just by her company. And the first thing I thought of, when I learned of her illness, was what good company she's kept, what close, deserving friends and family she has in all of those around her now and evermore. Rest in peace, my sister. There will be a wake/service from 4-8pm at the Goodrich Funeral Home, Sunday, February 11 at 128 Washington Street, in Lynn. The funeral procedes at 10am on the 12th at the Baptist Church on the corner of Essex & Washington (also in Lynn). Please send flowers through Tony the Florist, at 800-634-5627, and condolence letters to Marlene & Ken Waters at PO 23, Lynne, MA 01903. Or call Ken at 617-599-2651.
